Ayer Council on Aging Votes to Expand Board to 7
Ayer Council on Aging board votes to seek expansion from five to seven members.
Council on Aging · Meeting of September 8, 2026
Ayer Council on Aging board votes to seek expansion from five to seven members. Member Dennis Curran pointed out neighboring towns run far larger boards, from Groton, Littleton and Townsend's nine seats down to Pepperell's seven, and said a recent vacancy drew three interested residents for a single open seat: "The number seven does not seem excessive to me." The board will submit a memo to the Select Board ahead of its September 15 meeting, aiming for a spot on the October 26 Special Town Meeting warrant. Separately, Director Katie reported the senior center logged 614 service interactions with 170 unduplicated clients in fiscal 2026, data the board wants to use to push for restoring a town social worker position cut from the fiscal 2027 budget.
Member Cheryl Boissy, a licensed clinical social worker herself, floated a per-diem contract model instead of a full-time hire. The center will also close September 14 to 25 for a repaving project, shifting lunches to Town Hall.
