School Committee · Meeting of August 19, 2026

AYER — The Ayer-Shirley Regional School Committee lacked a quorum Wednesday, tabling votes on student handbook revisions and a CAPS Collaborative financial report until September. Chair Chris Rupprecht presided as the panel introduced new athletic director Nate Diffin and heard that Ayer Shirley Regional High School climbed four spots to rank 111th in Massachusetts, per U.S. News.

Business official Mr. Plunkett and consultant Dan Deedy detailed how the district closed a $651,949 FY25 deficit, ending FY26 with a $4,175 general fund balance and $356,000 in school choice funds, while flagging roughly $140,000 in deficit student activity accounts due to be resolved by September 30. Member Jim Quinty called it "an incredibly difficult budget year." The Ayer Affordable Housing Committee's Janet Providegas previewed a 106-unit project planned for Fitchburg Road and a rental assistance program that has grown from eight to 14 families in four years.

The meeting adjourned unanimously at 7:37 p.m.
