The board voted unanimously March 9 to approve revised rules governing backyard poultry and other permitted animals, after a hybrid public hearing that drew residents both in person and on Zoom. New provisions make permit holders responsible for rodent control and add avian influenza guidance tied to resources from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the USDA. A proposed flat $50 late-renewal fee was scaled back after public objection: first-time late filers will pay $25, with repeat offenders charged $50. The right-to-inspect section, which as drafted allowed entry "anytime and without prior notice", was also revised after resident Jennifer King of 7 Union Street called it "too broad," with the board agreeing to require advance notification and a response window tied to the severity of the complaint. Renewals must be submitted by May 31; finalized regulations will accompany this year's renewal packets.
