Senior Center Building Committee OKs Bid Release
Other Committee · Meeting of September 17, 2026
Ayer's Senior Center Building Committee clears bid documents for release, moving its new senior center toward construction bidding. The panel voted unanimously Thursday to authorize the bid package and schedule, targeting general contractor bids by November 4 and a contract award around a November 17 Select Board meeting. Members also approved a $295,935 contract amendment for owner's project manager Vertex covering construction administration, on a 5-0 roll call, and signed off on $31,914.49 in monthly vendor invoices.
A lingering concern: a federal "Build America, Buy America" requirement tied to a pending federal grant could add roughly $1 million to structural steel costs, and the town had not yet heard on the grant. "Which really only sets you up for failure at that point," one member said, explaining why the committee is avoiding public promises on an opening date. Construction is expected to run into late 2027, with a possible spring 2028 opening.
