Ayer CPC Backs $66,000 Dog Park Shade Structure

Other Committee · Meeting of September 2, 2026

Ayer's Community Preservation Committee votes to advance a $66,000 dog park shade structure to a September 28 public hearing. Public Works Director Dan told the committee the original shade structure was cut from the dog park's 2018 construction for lack of funds, leaving users without relief after four of eight preserved shade trees since died. The panel padded Dan's initial $60,000 ask by 10 percent for contingencies, noting unused Community Preservation Act funds return automatically to the open space account, which held $1,388,079 as of August 31.

Dan is courting Nashoba Valley Technical High School and the Shriver Job Corps center in Devens to cut labor costs. Member Beth pushed for "real robust public processes" before committing more money to Pieroni Park and other recreation sites. The committee also learned 14 Ayer families are now enrolled in a CPC-funded rental assistance program.
