Ayer conservation board approves culvert replacement plan
Conservation · Meeting of September 24, 2026
Ayer Conservation Commission approves culvert order, addresses pond safety scare. The board voted unanimously to close a public hearing and sign an order of conditions for a culvert replacement on Groton School Road, a Department of Public Works project designed with engineer Maria Johnson-Burke that will swap a wooden pedestrian bridge for a paved sidewalk. Vice Chair George Bacon said of pond-treatment safety concerns, "I don't remember any time where we've ever had this become an issue." The board also reviewed a September 10 incident in which a resident swam in Sandy Pond during a scheduled herbicide treatment and went to the emergency room as a precaution before being cleared.
Town Manager Robert proposed a functioning QR code, expanded Facebook postings, and advance alerts to police, fire and the DPW before future treatments, changes that carry no added cost since the town already holds a notification-system subscription. Member John Schmalenberger confirmed the new QR code near the pond works.
