Ayer Conservation Commission Clears Barnum Road Bridge Repair With Unanimous Vote

Conservation · Meeting of July 23, 2026

Ayer Conservation Commission unanimously cleared the Barnum Road Bridge rehabilitation project Thursday, issuing a negative determination of applicability for targeted repairs to the bridge over Bowers Brook. Chair Jessica Gugino presided over the July 23 meeting, where structural engineer Anu Patil and environmental manager Oksana Pertushna told the commission the work — concrete repairs, guardrail upgrades, and erosion stabilization at an exposed abutment — will remain above the bank with no in-water disturbance. The project was first presented to the commission in October 2023 but stalled for lack of funding; a new filing was required because the original determination's three-year validity period had expired.

Member George Bacon moved the negative determination after Conservation Agent Heather Hampson confirmed the project qualifies for a state exemption but falls under the town's local wetlands bylaw, which carries no such exemption. Construction is targeted for the 2027 season, with the community garden adjacent to the bridge identified as the likely equipment staging area.
